Anti-Graffiti Coating
Anti-graffiti treatments provide an
effective barrier, especially on porous surfaces, such as
brick, stone, rendering etc. They make cleaning much easier
and also provide protection against air pollution and corrosion
by water ingress. Our surveyors provide comprehensive proposals,
which include, substrate cleaning and preparation, repairs,
alterations, number and specific coating requirements, method
statements and COSHH material data sheets.
There are two main types of anti graffiti
coatings, permanent and sacrificial.
Permanent
These paints are normally Polyurethane or Terrethene based
and cure to a very hard permanent finish. Coatings can be
clear or pigmented. Advantages: Very hard wearing and durable.
Will last for up to ten years. Graffiti is easily removed
by means of chemical agitation. Ideal for murals, tiled and
all painted surfaces. Provides a protective barrier against
corrosion and pollution.Disadvantages: Clear coatings have
a glossy finish, are highly visible and will change the appearance
of the substrate. Environmentally disliked as they can contain
hazardous solvents. Can trap water vapour. For this reason
these coatings are prohibited on listed buildings. Materials
are costly.
Sacrificial
These are clear wax-type or silicone based compounds.Advantages:Practically
invisible, do not affect appearance of the substrate. Graffiti
can be removed using chemicals or hot water. Environmentally
friendly. Low odour for internal use. Ideal for facades, monuments,
walls and endangered surfaces. Allows surfaces to breath.Disadvantages:
When graffiti is removed, the affected area must be re-coated.
Some types are cold water soluble and unsuitable for external
use.
